An endoscopy is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic procedures in gastroenterology, allowing doctors to examine the inner lining of the digestive tract using a flexible tube with a camera. If your doctor has recommended an endoscopy, here is what you need to know.
Before the Procedure: You will be asked to fast for at least 6–8 hours. Inform your doctor about all medications you take, especially blood thinners. You may be given a mild sedative or throat anaesthetic.
During the Procedure: The endoscope is gently inserted through the mouth and guided into the oesophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine. The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes. You may feel mild pressure but should not feel pain.
After the Procedure: You will be monitored briefly as sedation wears off. A responsible adult should accompany you home. Results are usually discussed immediately or after biopsy analysis.
At Unity Gastro & Liver Hospital, our experienced endoscopists ensure your procedure is as comfortable and safe as possible.
